CDC data shows higher deaths from 25-54 years old in 2021 compared to 2018-2020

The CEO of OneAmerica, in this article Indiana life insurance CEO, says deaths are up 40% among people ages 18-64 said that the increase in fatalities is across the board in the whole insurance industry. That made me look at the CDC, where all the deaths for the US are reported.

I checked the CDC Mortality Statistics for yearly deaths. The years 2018 till 2021 are available, but for 2021 it is only up to December 18, 2021.

I made the table below from The CDC’s Provisional Mortality Statistics, through December 18, 2021, as of January 02, 2022. It shows the yearly comparison (2018-2020) of Crude deaths Per 100,000 people in the US.

The crude death rate is the total number of deaths to residents in a specified geographic area (country, state, county, etc.) divided by the total population for the same geographic area (for a specified time period, usually a calendar year) and multiplied by 100,000.

A higher number of people in a given population or time may have more deaths compared to a group with lesser numbers. The denominator of 100,000 in Crude Death Rates makes the comparison more accurate.

Note that the Crude death rate for the 25-34, 35-44, and 45-54-year-old age groups are higher in 2021 compared to 2018-2020. Why is that? Is it from the COVID shots?

The 55-64 years old group is about the same in 2020 (1,054.40) and 2021 (1,039.40)

The 65-74 age group decreased from (2,103.20) in 2020 to (2,055.70) in 2021,  but it should have been more considering that the shots were supposed to be more than 95% effective. Their death rate should be near the 2018-2019 levels.

The 75-84 group improved in 2021, but their death rate did not return to the 2018-2019 pre-pandemic years.

From the looks of the graph, only the 85+ years old group is the only group whose death rate returned to the 2018-2019 levels. They are the ones who benefited the most from the shots.

The 2021 results are still incomplete, and I will keep checking the CDC website for the complete data. I think the death rates will be higher.
