Profit over people, cost over care: America’s broken healthcare exposed by virus-Guardian

In the wealthiest country in the world, the Covid-19 pandemic has exposed the core of a healthcare system that is structurally incapable of dealing with the pandemic. Federal and local governments, health insurers and employers have pledged to help Americans pay their way through this crisis, but to do so requires a dramatic overhaul of a system which has for decades prioritized cost over care.

Protective equipment costs increase over 1,000% as demand surges during pandemic

The cost of personal protective equipment is skyrocketing – more than 1,000% in some cases – as the coronavirus pandemic continues.

The federal government’s Strategic National Stockpile has nearly emptied and states have been left to find PPE supplies on their own. The surge in demand has left importers, suppliers and purchasers scrambling. And price gouging has exacerbated the problem.

“The cost keeps rising and rising and rising, and there’s no end in sight,” said Michael Einhorn, CEO and President of Dealmed, a PPE distributor based in New York.

COVID-19: VN earns accolades for punching above its weight

HÀ NỘI — As the global number of COVID-19 cases surpasses the two million milestone, Việt Nam has started to receive international accolades for its all-out efforts that have managed to keep its tally considerably low given its close proximity to China.

Strict mass quarantine, intensive contact tracing, early sealing off of borders with virus-hit regions, decisive leadership and social unity were variously cited as the reasons for Việt Nam’s initial successes against the onslaught of the novel coronavirus despite having limited resources, while many other advanced nations buckle under an explosion of patients with deaths running up to the thousands.

The unsung warriors amid the COVID-19 pandemic

HÀ NỘI — The light in the lab of the Hà Nội Centre for Disease Control (CDC) hasn’t been off for a second since March 6.

That’s when Việt Nam discovered the 17th COVID-19 patient after twenty days of no new cases.

In the following month, the number of cases in Hà Nội rose to 123. Tens of thousands of people connected to the positive cases in the city had to have their health checked and monitored, meaning a huge workload for the health workers at CDC, which is tasked with disease prevention and health risk reduction.

“Lab workers of the centre have been working round the clock for the past month, with four shifts a day,” said Nguyễn Thị Kiều Anh, Deputy Director of Hà Nội CDC.

China, Europe show restarting virus-hit economies not easy

BEIJING (AP) — As countries consider how to restart economies that have been halted by the coronavirus, the early experiences in China and parts of Europe show it will be no easy task.

Workers back on the job are wary of spending much or going out. Shoppers are staying away from the few stores reopening. Masks and social distancing measures are not fading. And pervasive is the fear the virus could return if lockdowns meant to stop its spread are eased too much, too quickly.

Still, leaders are anxious to reopen factories, schools and shops and to repair the economic damage from the pandemic that has infected more than 2 million people and claimed more than 137,000 lives.
