High Anti-SARS-CoV-2 Antibodies Among the Unvaccinated in Bangui, Central African Republic

Government agencies that make policies for the COVID-19 pandemic should learn from the Central African Republic.

The Central African Republic is in the middle of Africa. Its name says it all. The image below shows the Central African Republic in green.

A preprint study showed impressively high antibodies (74.1%) against the SARS-CoV-2 among unvaccinated people in Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic.

The study was conducted by Institut Pasteur de Bangui and the Université de Bangui and involved 799 unvaccinated people.

The table below shows the characteristics of the study group and the percentage with antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2.

You can see that antibody levels are high across the board. Groups of all ages, both males and females, every level of education, including the presence or absence of chronic diseases, have a high proportion of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies.

Based on Our world in data, the total number of fully vaccinated people in the Central African Republic is only 6.5%. Compare that to other countries.

The COVID-19 cumulative case fatality rate is less than 1%.

Our World in Data

Compared to the US, UK, and Australia, the Central African Republic has a lower case fatality rate.

The authors explained the results as,

The main reason for this high seroprevalence is presumably the lack of application of preventive measures by the general population, irrespective of their nature, in particular strict confinement, social distancing, and the wearing of masks.

These measures have essentially never been adhered to due to economic and sociological reasons.

So the people of Bangui of the Central African Republic did not get vaccinated, didn’t wear masks, did not socially distance, went into lockdown, or quarantined themselves, and now they have high immunity levels!

Crazy but true!
