6 Ways Exercise Protects against Infections

There is a rapidly spreading strain of coronavirus called SARS-Cov-2. It is a new strain of coronavirus which cause the disease called Covid-19. New viruses could infect more people because there is no immunity to it.

With the rapid spread of the virus, we must prepare ourselves to prevent getting sick from it. Washing the hands and avoiding contact with a known ill person is very effective.

Another effective way to have protection against the virus is exercise. Physical activity enhances the body’s protection against infections? There are many ways.

  1. Exercise spreads the white blood cells throughout the body. Physical activity redistributes the lymphocytes from the bloodstream into the peripheral tissues. Lymphocytes are a type of white blood cell (WBC) that are called upon to fight viral infections and cancer cells. The spread of the lymphocytes allows for a faster response to viruses, whether they may be in the lungs and the gastrointestinal tract.
  2. Work-outs increases the antibody response to an infection.
  3. People above 65 who exercise increase their number of natural killer T-cells. Killer T-cells are a type of lymphocyte that kills viruses and destroys cancer cells.
  4. Exercise also increases the cytokines for proper infection control.
  5. Exercise increases the appetite of the other WBCs called the neutrophils and monocytes to phagocytose or “eat” and annihilate the microorganisms, whether they are bacteria or viruses.
  6. Exercise also helps to burn fat and lessen chronic inflammation.

Exercise in the current Covid-19 epidemic

In the present Covid-19 pandemic, the highest death rates are in the older age group and the group with other medical problems like diabetes and heart disease, and cancer.

In this regard, it is essential for all age groups, including the most vulnerable group, to enhance their ability to fight infections with exercise.
