Barbecue sauce may seem harmless, but it’s packed with hidden sugars—6 to 7 grams per tablespoon. A typical 2–4 tablespoon serving delivers 12–28 grams of sugar, equivalent to a candy bar or almost a full can of soda. Add banana ketchup or Mang Tomas lechon sauce—popular Filipino dips—and your sugar load increases by another 12–18 grams.

This sugar surge can spike blood sugar levels rapidly, especially when eaten with refined carbs like white rice. These spikes lead to:

  • Insulin resistance
  • Atherosclerosis
  • Fatty liver and pancreatic fat
  • Weight gain and belly fat
  • Memory issues and metabolic syndrome

Even normoglycemics are affected. Repeated glucose spikes can wear out the pancreas, trigger inflammation, and lay the groundwork for chronic diseases.

What You Can Do:

  • Use a glucometer to check your blood sugar 1 hour after meals.
  • Swap BBQ sauce with sukang maanghang (spiced vinegar) or a homemade low-sugar BBQ sauce.
  • Aim for sauces with less than 3g of sugar per serving.
  • Make small but powerful changes—sugar-free sauces can reduce your intake by 20–30 grams per meal.

Take control of your health—ditch the stealth sugar without sacrificing flavor.

  • Insulin resistance
  • Baradong ugat at sakit sa puso
  • Fatty liver at taba sa lapay (pancreas)
  • Pagdagdag ng tiyan at timbang
  • Pagkalito at panganib sa Alzheimer’s
  • Metabolic syndrome
