A study published in the British Medical Journal shows increased covid-19 infection 90 days after the second injection of the Pfizer-BioNTech BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine.

Elapsed time since BNT162b2 vaccine and risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection: test negative design study

Results:

83 057 adults received an RT-PCR test for SARS-CoV-2 during the study period and 9.6% had a positive result.

Time elapsed since the vaccine injection was significantly longer in individuals who tested positive.

The adjusted odds ratio for infection at time intervals >90 days since vaccination was significantly increased compared with the reference of <90 days:

2.37 for 90-119 days

2.66 for 120-149 days

2.82 for 150-179 days, and

2.82 for ≥180 days

Conclusions

In this large population of adults tested for SARS-CoV-2 by RT-PCR after two doses of mRNA BNT162b2 vaccine, a gradual increase in the risk of infection was seen for individuals who received their second vaccine dose after at least 90 days.

To guide evidence-based prevention of COVID-19 in children, we estimated risks of severe outcomes in 820,404 symptomatic paediatric cases reported by 10 EU Member States between August 2020 and October 2021.

Case and hospitalisation rates rose as overall transmission increased but severe outcomes were rare:

9,611 (1.2%) were hospitalised

640 (0.08%) required intensive care and

84 (0.01%) died.

Despite increased individual risk in cases with comorbidities such as cancer, diabetes, cardiac or lung disease, most (83.7%) hospitalised children had no reported comorbidity.

Japan’s fifth wave of Covid-19 Delta variant has virtually disappeared so dramatically that some scientists are puzzled as to why it happened. One team suggests the highly infectious Delta strain mutated into extinction on the island nation.

In mid-August, Japan experienced a peak in Covid-19 infections, recording over 23,000 new cases per day. Now the metric is just around 170, with deaths attributed to the disease mostly remaining in single digits this month.

The decline has been attributed by many to high vaccination rates, public acceptance of masks, and other factors, but some researchers say the drop was uniquely significant, compared to other nations with similar conditions.

Ituro Inoue, a geneticist at the National Institute of Genetics, believes that Japan had the good fortune of witnessing the Delta strain mostly rooting out other variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus before then eradicating itself. He explained his team’s theory to the Japan Times newspaper this week.

For some time now, Inoue and his fellow scientists were researching mutations of SARS-CoV-2 and how they are affected by the protein nsp14, which is crucial for the reproduction of the virus.

RNA viruses, like the one causing Covid-19, tend to have a very high mutation rate, which helps them quickly adapt to changes in the environment. However, this opens the door for a so-called “error catastrophe,” when bad mutations pile up and finally cause the full extinction of a strain.

The protein nsp14 appears to offer a form of error proofreading that helps the virus genome to stay below the threshold of the “error catastrophe.”

Miss France self-isolating after testing positive for COVID in Israel

Miss France Clémence Botino was self-isolating on Monday after testing positive for COVID upon arriving in Israel to take part in the Miss Universe pageant in Eilat.

Botino arrived in Israel before the government put new restrictions in place due to the Omicron variant. As per regulations, she was tested and found positive. Sources said she was transported to self-isolation by ambulance and was expected to miss the pageant, which is scheduled to be held on Dec. 12.

Organizers of the Miss Universe pageant are doing their best to ensure that the event goes ahead as scheduled and in compliance with Israeli COVID regulations.

Carlotta Masala: 27-Year-Old Dies From Myocarditis Months After Receiving Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine, Father Seeks Answers

SESTU, CAGLIARI – An autopsy has concluded that 27-year-old Carlotta Masala has died as a result of pulmonary edema linked to myocarditis. Carlotta, a sporty, sunny girl who had no previous health problems, was found dead by her father Francesco on Tuesday morning at their home in Sestu. The 27-year-old had received her second dose of the Pfizer vaccine in August.

Francesco commented after her death on Tuesday:

“Carlotta is gone. The rescuers said she died of natural causes.

Let me be clear: my daughter was healthy. She loved sports and photography. She had the second dose of the Pfizer vaccine in August.”

Carlotta’s sudden death was originally thought to be from natural causes, despite the 27-year-old having been previously healthy. However, Francesco demanded an investigation and autopsy which revealed yesterday the cause of death to be pulmonary edema linked to myocarditis.

Omicron Variant: Panic Grips Indian Officials as Passenger From South Africa Tests COVID-Positive

On Sunday, the Indian government changed its international travel guidelines while proposing a mandatory seven-day home quarantine for travellers from “at risk” countries who test negative for the virus.

An Indian national travelling from South Africa has tested positive for COVID-19 upon return to his home country, causing panic among Indian officals. It is not yet confirmed if he is infected with the Omicron variant of the virus, The Indian Express reported on Monday.

The 32-year-old is a resident of Mumbai and has now been transferred to an institutional quarantine centre. He is under observation. He arrived in Delhi from South Africa on 24 November and then took a connecting flight to Mumbai.

“We have sent his samples for genome sequencing to find out if he is carrying the Omicron variant”, Dr Pradeep Vyas, Additional Chief Secretary (Health), said.

Meanwhile, authorities in several Indian cities, including Delhi and Mumbai, have begun contacting passengers who arrived in the city over the last 15 days from “countries of concern”, including South Africa, and checking on their health.

Israel Moves To Ban All Foreigners From Entry Amid Omicron Variant Fears

Israel’s Knesset is set to hold a special emergency “coronavirus cabinet” late Saturday night where government officials will vote on enacting a complete closure of the country to foreign travel. The ban will tentatively be in effect for the next two weeks.

Already Israel has banned all foreigners arriving from the majority of African countries in recent days on fears that the highly-mutated Omicron coronavirus variant, which first emerged in South Africa, could be the next deadly wave – and with the vaccine possibly doing little to stop it.

The greatly tightened travel and tourist restrictions are expected to be announced late Saturday night or early Sunday. It’s expected to also include a new mandatory quarantine of three days or more for vaccinated Israeli citizens who’ve returned from traveling abroad. For unvaccinated inbound Israeli citizens the quarantine will be a week.

THE new Covid variant, which could weaken vaccine protection by 40 percent, could potentially already be in the UK.

The variant, scientifically called B.1.1.529, has not yet been confirmed in the UK as of yet.

But Dr Susan Hopkins, chief medical adviser at the UK Health Security Agency, said it was “always possible”.

With up to 700 people flying in from South Africa per day, it cannot be ruled out.

The Health Secretary Sajid Javid has warned the variant “poses a substantial risk” to the public and it’s “highly likely” it’s spread to other countries.

He told MPs in the Commons today:

Health bosses have branded it a “Variant Under Investigation of high priority” – the first time such a label has been used.

Early indications show the current vaccines “may be less effective against it” and that it “may be more transmissible than the Delta variant”.

One of the UK’s major medicines to treat sick Covid patients may not work as well against the variant.

Some 80 per cent of positive tests in the Gauteng province of South Africa show evidence of the variant, which may explain the countries “exponential growth” in infections.

Global risk from Omicron coronavirus variant very high, WHO says

The new coronavirus variant Omicron has an “unprecedented number” of mutations in the spike protein, some of which could affect the path of the pandemic, the World Health Organization said.

In a technical brief on the newest “variant of concern” on Sunday, the UN health body cautioned that assessments so far were based on limited information, but said the overall global risk related to the highly mutated variant was “very high”.

“Given mutations that may confer immune escape potential and possibly transmissibility advantage, the likelihood of potential further spread of Omicron at the global level is high,” the WHO wrote in the brief released on Monday afternoon.

“Depending on these characteristics, there could be future surges of Covid-19, which could have severe consequences, depending on a number of factors including where surges may take place.

A Fearstorm Is Upon Us

I just sat down at my computer and saw that a new fearstorm is upon us. I saw signs of it earlier in the week, and now it has arrived. And so, briefly, I’d like everyone to understand how these things operate.

Firstly, please notice that fearstorms are coordinated; they arrive in terrifying clusters, with more or less every elite-driven bullhorn saying the same thing, playing up the same terrifying “possibilities.” And notice that your emotional reactions entirely discount “possibilities.” You’re feeling nearly the same shock you would if the terrors were certain. Humans have a weakness for that, and the people behind these fearstorms know it.

The goal of a fearstorm is for you to stop thinking rationally and to act reflexively. Fear does that to us, and the people driving fearstorms can conjure more fear any time they want. Imagined fears are infinite, after all. Take out a pad of paper some time, and see how many terrifying things you can come up with in half an hour.

So, if you allow yourself to be tossed about by possibilities, you’ll be tossed about forever. The people who produce these things know this, and that’s their winning strategy.

Instead of listening to “the news” and reacting to social media (outfits that monetize your fear), use your eyes and ears to see what’s happening in the real, physical world. Has the world you see and hear changed over the last day?

Swiss get to choose whether to keep vaccine passports in place

Despite months of protests, Swiss citizens have overwhelmingly voted to keep the country’s system of Covid vaccination certificates in place. The deal was sweetened for voters by the promise of financial assistance.

Some 62% of voters chose on Sunday to maintain the country’s coronavirus measures. These measures include a controversial system of Covid vaccination certificates, required since September to enter bars, restaurants, theaters and other public spaces.

Majorities in 24 of Switzerland’s 26 cantons backed the law, with only the tiny cantons of Schwyz and Appenzell Innerrhoden rejecting the measures.
