COVID-19 Infections Among Vaccinated More Common, Severe in Immunocompromised: Study

Breakthrough COVID-19 cases are more common and severe in people with weakened immune systems, according to a new study.

Breakthrough infections are those that occur in vaccinated people.

Immunocompromised vaccinated people were three times more likely to contract COVID-19, the disease caused by the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus, according to researchers, who published their findings in the Journal of Medical Economics.

The study found that just 0.08 percent of fully vaccinated people had a breakthrough case, but that 0.18 percent of immunocompromised people had a breakthrough infection.

While immunocompromised people represented 18 percent of those studied, they accounted for over 38 percent of infections, nearly six in 10 hospitalizations, and all the deaths.

WHO advises people 60 or older to postpone travel due to Omicron

The World Health Organization on Tuesday advised those 60 or older and other vulnerable people to postpone any travel plans in response to the emergence of the COVID-19 Omicron variant.

Driving the news: The WHO said on Monday that the Omicron variant poses a “very high” risk and may be more transmissible than other strains of COVID-19.

Though the WHO acknowledged there are still many uncertainties associated with the variant, the agency said it believes the likelihood of potential further spread of Omicron around the world is “high.”

What they’re saying: People “who are unwell or at risk of developing severe COVID-19 disease and dying” should delay their travel plans, the WHO said.

People at risk include people 60 or older or those with comorbidities such as heart disease, cancer or diabetes.

The WHO also urged countries to “continue to apply an evidence-informed and risk-based approach when implementing travel measures,” but urged against “blanket travel bans,” which it said “will not prevent the international spread.”

“Early evidence from genomic surveillance in South Africa suggests that B.1.1.529 is a serious cause for concern. The South African surveillance and epidemiology groups should be commended for their timely data collection, analysis and transparency.

“Armed by our experience and understanding of the Alpha and Delta variants, we know that early action is far better than late action. It may turn out that this variant is not as large a threat as Alpha and Delta, but the potential consequences of not acting on the possibility it could be are serious.

“Measures to prevent this variant of concern from spreading include implementing appropriate quarantine and PCR testing measures and sequencing on international travel from Southern Africa and continue careful monitoring of the circulating SARS-CoV-2 variants. The international community should get drugs and vaccines to South Africa as soon as possible. All countries should remain vigilant and share SARS-CoV-2 genomes.”

Prof Ravi Gupta, Professor of Clinical Microbiology, University of Cambridge, said:

“B.1.1.529 has signatures of cumulative mutation indicating that it emerged in a chronic infection.

“B.1.1.529 does certainly look of significant concern based on mutations present. Many have been shown to impact binding by neutralising antibodies, and some are known to increase the ability of virus to enter cells or to make them fuse together to allow cell-cell spread.”

Prof Francois Balloux, Professor of Computational Systems Biology and Director, UCL Genetics Institute, UCL, said:

“B.1.1529 is a new lineage that has been found in Botswana that carries an unusual constellation of mutations. Given the large number of mutations it has accumulated apparently in a single burst, it likely evolved during a chronic infection of an immunocompromised person, possibly in an untreated HIV/AIDS patient.

“It is difficult to know what to make of the carriage of both P681H and N679K. It is a combination we see only exceptionally rarely. I suspect it is generally not ‘stable’, but it might be so, in combination with other mutations/deletions.

“I would definitely expect it to be poorly recognised by neutralising antibodies relative to Alpha or Delta. It is difficult to predict how transmissible it may be at this stage.

“So far, four strains have been sequenced in a region of Sub-Saharan with reasonable surveillance in place. It may be present in other parts of Africa.

“For the time being, it should be closely monitored and analysed, but there is no reason to get overly concerned, unless it starts going up in frequency in the near future.”

Omicron was in Netherlands days earlier than first thought

BRUSSELS (AP) — The omicron variant was already in the Netherlands when South Africa alerted the World Health Organization about it last week, Dutch health authorities said Tuesday, adding to fear and confusion over the new version of the coronavirus in a weary world hoping it had left the worst of the pandemic behind.

The Netherlands’ RIVM health institute found omicron in samples dating from Nov. 19 and 23. The WHO said South Africa first reported the variant to the U.N. healthy agency on Nov. 24.

White House Quietly Delays Vaccine Mandate As Another Federal Judge Objects

Yet another federal court has decided to block the Biden White House’s COVID mandate, only this time the judge focused on a requirement for health-care workers to either get the jab, or say goodbye to their jobs.

Earlier this month, a judge in Texas blocked the White House from enforcing some of its mandate by way of large corporations. Now, a different federal district judge, this time in Missouri, is blocking the Biden administration from enforcing a vaccine mandate for health-care workers in some 10 states.

Meanwhile, as more courts object to the mandate, the White House is quietly telling federal agencies they can hold off on firing federal workers for not complying with the vaccine mandate until after the holidays, according to a memo obtained by the press on Monday. The decision was sourced to OMB, the White House’s Office of Management and Budget, according to the report.

According to Biden-loving ABC News, this change, which has not yet been publicly announced, comes as President Biden is putting pressure on private employers to launch their own mandates.

The US District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri on Monday issued a preliminary injunction on the mandate, which requires health-workers to be vaccinated by Jan. 4, 2022.

Legal observers have said the mandate is on firm footing. If the injunction is appealed, it would land in the Eighth Circuit, which has just one active or senior status judge appointed by a Democrat out of 14.

FDA review finds Merck’s COVID-19 pill effective but flags safety concerns

Federal health regulators say an experimental COVID-19 pill developed by Merck is effective against the coronavirus, but they will seek input from independent advisors on risks of birth defects and other potential problems during pregnancy.

The Food and Drug Administration posted its analysis of the pill last week ahead of a public meeting Tuesday, when a panel of experts will weigh in on its safety and effectiveness. The agency isn’t required to follow the panel’s advice.

The FDA scientists said their review identified several potential risks, including possible toxicity to developing fetuses and birth defects that were identified in studies of the pill conducted in animals.

A leading Virginia critical-care doctor had his hospital privileges suspended the same day he appeared in court to testify in his lawsuit against the hospital for prohibiting him from prescribing a lifesaving treatment protocol for COVID-19 patients.

Dr. Paul Marik, director of the intensive-care unit at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, discovered he had been suspended for 14 days when he found a letter on his desk at the hospital on November 20.

The letter was dated November 18, the very day Marik testified in Norfolk Circuit Court concerning the hospital’s recently imposed ban on his using the MATH+ protocol, which includes ivermectin and other nonstandard treatments, to treat patients dying from COVID-19. According to the Defender, the protocol “counters the body’s overwhelming inflammatory response to the SARS-CoV-2 virus” and has generated “no reports of adverse medical events” — something that cannot be said for any of the vaccines or Remdesivir, the federal government’s treatment of choice.

“Our COVID-19 protocol is based on the best scientific data available, yet Sentara claimed the medications I used were toxic and harmful, which is an absolute lie,” Marik told the Defender.

“What they want me to use is Remdesivir. We know Remdesivir increases death by three percent, increases the risk of hospital stay, and increases the risk of kidney and liver failure. It does not improve patient outcomes. It is toxic. But the hospital gets a bonus if Remdesivir is prescribed. They profit from the expensive drug but not the cheap drug that people can afford.”

CDC says ages 18 and up should get booster shot

WASHINGTON — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Monday broadened its recommendation for COVID-19 booster shots for all adults as the new omicron variant is identified in more countries.

The agency had previously approved boosters for all adults, but only recommended them for those 50 years and older or if they live in a long-term care setting.

CDC Director, Dr. Rochelle Walensky said the new guidance reflects the emergence of the omicron variant, which has not yet been identified in the U.S. but that officials say will inevitably reach the country.

“Everyone ages 18 and older should get a booster shot either when they are 6 months after their initial Pfizer or Moderna series or 2 months after their initial J&J vaccine,” she said in a statement.

In an exclusive Interview with The Defender, the man’s wife, Amy Bolin, said there was no reason her husband, Bobby Bolin, should have been forced to get the vaccine.

“In the medical field, your goal is supposed to be to improve and save people’s lives, and instead you’re giving them one option — you either do this or you can’t get a life-saving transplant,” Amy said.

Amy said her husband had no choice. “He knew that without lungs he was not going to live because his lungs were failing him. But look at what happened by making that choice.”

After his second Moderna shot, received on April 17, Bolin developed a pulmonary embolism and atrial fibrillation — a heart condition characterized by an irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath, chest pain and extreme fatigue. His health rapidly deteriorated and he passed away Aug. 20, before receiving new lungs.
