Washington virus deaths hit 18 with 2 more from nursing home
SEATTLE (AP) — Two more residents at a nursing home at the center of the outbreak of the new coronavirus in northwestern Washington have died, bringing the statewide total to 18, officials said Sunday.
A woman in her 80s and a man in his 90s died in the last several days, according to a news release Sunday from health officials for Seattle and King County. They were both residents of the Life Care Center of Kirkland. They both died in area hospitals.
California public venues, schools close to stop virus spread
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A cruise ship with at least 21 cases of the new coronavirus is headed to the port of Oakland, California, but will remain in international waters for at least another day as officials worked on plans to transport American passengers to military bases around the U.S. and repatriate international ones.

Officials said Sunday that one male 70-year-old health care worker from Teaneck is in stable condition in a hospital intensive care unit. A 32-year-old man from West New York was also hospitalized but a condition report wasn’t available.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A team of scientists jostled for a view of the lab dish, staring impatiently for the first clue that an experimental vaccine against the new coronavirus just might work.
After weeks of round-the-clock research at the National Institutes of Health, it was time for a key test. If the vaccine revs up the immune system, the samples in that dish — blood drawn from immunized mice — would change color.
MIAMI (AP) — From Miami to Seattle, nursing homes and other facilities for the elderly are stockpiling masks and thermometers, preparing for staff shortages and screening visitors to protect a particularly vulnerable population from the coronavirus.
Professor Yuen Kwok-yung from the University of Hong Kong, who advised authorities on control measures against the disease, said although the situation in mainland China and Hong Kong might improve in summer, there could be more imported cases from the southern hemisphere in winter.

The 76-year-old woman, who had diabetes and lived in Un Lok House in Cheung Sha Wan’s Un Chau Estate, died at 5.13pm in Caritas Medical Centre, the Hospital Authority confirmed. She was admitted to hospital on February 29 after she was believed to have contracted the virus locally.

4 new COVID-19 cases in PH bring total to 10 – DOH
MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) on Sunday reported four new cases of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the Philippines, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 10.
In a statement, the DOH said the results of samples from all the new confirmed cases, which were tested on Saturday, were released on Sunday.
A total of 273 people have tested positive for coronavirus in the UK, health authorities have said in their latest figures, updating a number which had stood at 209.
Checkpoints expected as Italian lockdown decree officially approved – Guardian
The decree imposing a lockdown for more than a quarter of Italy’s population has now been officially approved by the government and checkpoints are expected to appear at toll booths, stations and other points of entry to Lombardy.
It also provides for measures for all of Italy. Weddings and funerals are suspended throughout the country
Movement in and out of Lombardy and 14 other central and northern provinces is prohibited. People will be allowed in and out for serious reasons, including work reasons, upon the authorisation of local authorities. The decree also puts a ban on all public events, the closure of cinemas, theatres and gyms.

First Vermont resident tests positive for new virus
MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — Vermont health officials have announced the state’s first case of COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas City-area woman who recently traveled to the Northeast is the first case of coronavirus in Kansas, officials confirmed Saturday.
Gov. Laura Kelly and health officials said the woman, who’s under 50, is isolating herself at home after seeing her doctor over the common symptoms of the new coronavirus, including a cough, slight fever and shortness of breath. She lives in Johnson County, the state’s most populous county.
“The patient’s doing well, by the way,” said Lee Norman, secretary of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
Official: White House didn’t want to tell seniors not to fly
NEW YORK (AP) — The White House overruled health officials who wanted to recommend that elderly and physically fragile Americans be advised not to fly on commercial airlines because of the new coronavirus, a federal official told The Associated Press.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention submitted the plan this week as a way of trying to control the virus, but White House officials ordered the air travel recommendation be removed, said the official who had direct knowledge of the plan. Trump administration officials have since suggested certain people should consider not traveling, but they have stopped short of the stronger guidance sought by the CDC.

SEOUL (Reuters) – South Korea reported an additional 179 new coronavirus cases, for a total of 272 new cases over the previous 24 hours, the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said late on Sunday.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — A 64-year-old man died in Argentina as a result of the new coronavirus, the first such death in Latin America, health authorities announced Saturday.
NEW YORK (AP) — Officials announced Saturday that New York state’s coronavirus caseload is on a steady rise, now up to 89. Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency to bolster the medical response to the outbreak, as the statewide total doubled from the 44 cases heading into the weekend. No one has died from the new virus in the state.
Cruise ship hit by virus to dock in Oakland, California
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A cruise ship hit by the new coronavirus is headed to the port of Oakland, California, the captain told passengers, though they were destined to stay aboard the ship for at least another day.
Grand Princess Capt. John Smith, in a recording provided by passenger Laurie Miller of San Jose, told guests the ship will dock in Oakland. Princess Cruises says it’s expected to arrive on Monday. The ship is carrying more than 3,500 people from 54 countries.
If governments can quarantine millions of people and cancel sports and other events, they can surely stop all cruises.
Italy announces quarantine affecting quarter of population
BEIJING (AP) — Italy’s prime minister announced a sweeping coronavirus quarantine early Sunday, restricting the movements of about a quarter of the country’s population in a bid to limit contagions at the epicenter of Europe’s outbreak.
Shortly after midnight, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte signed a decree affecting about 16 million people in the country’s prosperous north, including the Lombardy region and at least 14 provinces in neighboring regions. The extraordinary measures will be in place until April 3.
Mayor in virus-hit South Korean city says outbreak may be slowing
SEOUL (Reuters) – The mayor of the South Korean city hardest hit by that country’s coronavirus outbreak expressed cautious hope on Sunday that the numbers of new cases may be dropping, after the rate of increase dropped to its lowest level in 10 days.
ROME (Reuters) – Italy imposed a virtual lockdown across a swathe of its wealthy north on Sunday, including the financial capital Milan, in a drastic new attempt to try to contain a rapidly growing outbreak of coronavirus.
