Curcumin for the Early Treatment of COVID-19

The Front Line COVID-19 Critical Care Alliance (FLCCC) has a protocol called the IMASK+ for the prevention and early outpatient treatment for COVID-19.

The  I-MASK+ includes Curcumin which has a wide range of therapeutic effects.

The whole protocol can be accessed and downloaded on this link. The FLCCC protocols come in several languages.

Studies have shown that Curcumin:

  1. Has potential antiviral effects, including protein binding towards SARS-CoV-2 proteins, that is comparable to hydroxychloroquine.
  2. Curcumin has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-thrombotic, antiproliferative, neuroprotective, and cardioprotective properties.
  3. It can modulate several signaling molecules, including pro-inflammatory cytokines, to prevent a hyperimmune response and cytokine storms.
  4. Curcumin prevents unwanted clot formation and reduces blood viscosity, and reduces the coagulopathy seen in severe COVID-19.
  5. Curcumin offsets the cytokine storm to prevent lung injury and fibrosis. [1]

How Effective is Curcumin in COVID-19?

c19curcumin.com puts together the studies that tested Curcumin for COVID-19.  The chart below shows nine studies with a total of 867 patients. 71% of the people had improvement with early use of Curcumin, and 58% benefited from late treatment.

Four curcumin studies with 367 patients showed 33% avoided hospitalization with early treatment with Curcumin.

Curcumin Safety

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has designated Curcumin as
Generally Recognized As Safe(GRAS) and have good tolerability and safety profiles. The Allowable Daily Intake (ADI) value of Curcumin is 0–3 mg/kg body weight. [2]

Seven subjects receiving 500–12,000 mg in a study followed for 72 h experienced diarrhea, headache, rash, and yellow stool. [3].

One study showed that some subjects receiving 0.45 to 3.6 g/day curcumin for one to four months reported nausea and diarrhea and increased serum alkaline phosphatase and lactate dehydrogenase contents. [4]

How to Take Curcumin

The FLCCC recommends Curcumin 500 mg two times a day for 14 days for early treatment of COVID-19. There are several things to consider to maximize the absorption of Curcumin,

  1. Curcumin is not easily absorbed, but adding piperidine from black pepper will increase the absorption by 2000 times! [2]
  2. Curcumin should be heated. The body can absorb 12 times more curcumin and three times more turmeric when heated to 100°C. [5]
  3. Fat or oil increases the absorption of Curcumin.

A delicious way to enjoy Curcumin is to drink Golden Milk. The recipe from Healthy and Natural World is as follows:

Golden milk paste recipe

For the golden milk paste you need the following ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup of clean water
  • 1/4 cup of turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper

To make the golden paste, please do the following:

  • Put the pan with water in it on a medium heat setting.
  • Add turmeric and black pepper and stir well to create a smooth paste.
  • Cook gently for 7 to 9 minutes to get the paste properly cooked.
  • If the yellow paste becomes too dry, you can add some more water.
  • Allow the golden paste to cool and store in a glass container with an airtight lid.

The paste should keep in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks. After that, it develops a metallic taste and should be discarded.

Golden milk recipe

To make golden milk from the turmeric paste, you will need the following ingredients:

  • 1/4 – 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric paste depending on your taste
  • 1 cup almond milk or coconut milk (you can also use organic cow’s milk or other milk substitutes such as hemp milk, rice milk or oat milk)
  • 1 teaspoon of unrefined virgin coconut oil
  • Some honey (or use another natural sweetener such as maple syrup, stevia)

The recipe for making golden milk is as follows:

  • Put milk and turmeric paste in a pot and cook on medium heat.
  • Heat the mixture until steaming but not boiling. Some recipes call for boiling the mixture but prolonged heat can destroy the active ingredient curcumin.
  • Remove from heat and allow the yellow milk to cool down
  • Add honey and oil.

Curcumin can stain clothes, so be careful.

I can attest to the effectiveness of golden milk about its anti-inflammatory property. If I drink golden milk after lifting heavy weights, my muscles don’t feel as sore.

An easier way to take Curcumin will be to get curcumin capsules with black pepper.
