We often hear warnings about plastic waste in the ocean or seafood. But according to a 2025 French study, a more immediate threat may be right under your nose—literally. Microplastics, or tiny fragments of plastic less than 5 mm in size, are now floating invisibly in indoor air. These particles come from everyday materials: clothes, furniture, plastic packaging, and even car interiors. The shocking part? You breathe in tens of thousands of these particles every day, especially when indoors.
What Are Microplastics—and Why Size Matters
Microplastics range from 1 micrometer to 5 millimeters wide. However, the study focused on PM₁₀ microplastics—those between 1 and 10 micrometers—because they are small enough to enter your lower lungs, where gas exchange takes place. Larger particles tend to get trapped in the throat and cleared by mucus. But PM₁₀ particles bypass these defenses, possibly causing inflammation and other health issues.
Worse, 94% of indoor microplastics fall into this tiny, inhalable range, making them hard to see and nearly impossible to avoid without proper precautions.
How the Study Was Done
Researchers measured microplastics in air samples from homes and cars in France using Raman spectroscopy, a laser-based technique capable of detecting particles as small as 1 µm. Samples came from:
- Three apartments (including bedrooms and living rooms)
- Two cars (one old and one new)
All environments were tested under real-world conditions with closed windows. Air was passed through fine filters, and each sample was chemically analyzed to determine the type and amount of plastic present.
What They Found
The results were alarming:
- Apartments had a median of 528 particles/m³
- Cars had a median of 2,238 particles/m³
- One high-activity apartment recorded a spike of 34,404 particles/m³
Not Just Fibers—Fragments Are Worse
Contrary to expectations, 97% of the particles were fragments, not fibers. These jagged, broken pieces may be harder for the lungs to clear and more likely to trigger inflammation. The most common types of plastic found were:
- Polyethylene (PE) – from bags and packaging
- PET, PVC, ABS, polyamide – used in upholstery, dashboards, and textiles
How Much Are You Inhaling?
Based on average breathing rates:
- Adults inhale ~68,000 microplastic particles daily
- Children inhale ~47,000 particles daily
These estimates are 100 times higher than previous studies, simply because the technology used in this study could detect much smaller particles.
Health Risks of Inhaling Microplastics
Once inhaled, microplastic fragments can:
- Trigger immune responses and chronic inflammation
- Potentially enter the bloodstream
- Carry toxic chemicals (like flame retardants, dyes, or stabilizers)
- Act as “chemical sponges,” absorbing environmental pollutants like heavy metals or carcinogens
Even larger particles that don’t reach the lungs may be swallowed, ending up in the gut—adding to the plastic burden already coming from food and water.
Cars Are Worse Than Homes
Cars had more than 4x the microplastic concentration than homes. Why? Car interiors are filled with synthetic materials (nylon, PET, PVC) that shed plastic particles. Movement, vibration, and heat accelerate the breakdown. And since car ventilation systems often recycle air, small particles remain suspended longer unless filtered through a HEPA-grade cabin filter (which most vehicles lack).
How to Reduce Microplastic Exposure
You can’t eliminate exposure completely—but you can lower it with simple steps:
At Home:
- Use HEPA vacuums and damp cloths for cleaning.
- Choose natural fabrics like cotton and linen.
- Declutter: Plastic dust collects on unused clothes, rugs, and textiles.
- Open windows when outdoor air is clean.
- Avoid synthetic air fresheners or cleaning products that may worsen air quality.
In the Car:
- Clean weekly—especially dashboards and seats.
- Replace your cabin filter regularly (ask about HEPA-compatible options).
- Don’t store jackets or blankets inside—they shed particles.
- Use non-abrasive cleaners on plastic surfaces.
Children Are More Vulnerable
Children’s faster breathing, smaller airways, and developing immune systems make them more vulnerable. They also play closer to the floor, where particles settle. Clean play areas frequently, minimize plastic toys, and encourage outdoor play where air is cleaner.
Nanoplastics: A Growing Concern
Nanoplastics (smaller than 1 µm) are so tiny they can enter cells, the brain, and even cross the placenta. While this study didn’t directly measure nanoplastics, modeling suggested that adults may inhale 33 million nanoplastic particles per day. The full health effects are unknown—but the risk is real.

Microplastics are already in your lungs and your child’s—but you can reduce your exposure. Start with what you can control:
- Clean better
- Choose natural materials

Sa Bahay:
- Gumamit ng HEPA vacuum at basang basahan sa paglilinis.
- Pumili ng natural fabrics tulad ng cotton at linen.
- Declutter – bawasan ang mga damit, carpet, at plastic na gamit.
- Magbukas ng bintana kung malinis ang outdoor air.

Ang microplastics ay hindi na “malayong” problema. Nilalanghap mo ito araw-araw. Pero may magagawa ka:
- Linisin nang maayos
- Gumamit ng natural na materyales
- I-upgrade ang ventilation
- Iwasan ang labis na plastic
Hindi man perpekto, pero bawat hakbang ay tulong sa katawan mo at sa kinabukasan ng pamilya mo.
