Long COVID Brain Fog and Muscle Pain result from SARS-CoV-2 Persistence in the Nose and Saliva

This article shows why early treatment of COVID-19 is essential to prevent Long COVID symptoms.

A new study showed that if the SARS-CoV-2 is allowed to persist inside the nose for a month, it is more likely that the Long COVID symptoms will happen.

Long COVID occurs when the symptoms last for more than three months after the start of acute COVID. Long COVID can occur even in those who have mild SARS-CoV-2 infection.

The study, Long COVID brain fog and muscle pain are associated with longer time to clearance of SARS-CoV-2 RNA from the upper respiratory tract during acute infection, was authored by scientists from Johns Hopkins University.

Seventy-three non-hospitalized adults who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 and had mild symptoms of COVID-19 were included in the study. They were enrolled between April 21, 2020, and October 28, 2021.

81% were unvaccinated, 5% had only one shot, and 14% had received two COVID-19 jabs.

In the first 45 days after enrollment, saliva and the inside of their nose were tested for SARS-CoV-2 nine times (1, 3, 7, 10, 14, 21, 28, 35, and 42 days from enrollment)

All the participants answered a questionnaire to indicate if they had any of the 49 Long COVID symptoms at one, three, six, twelve, and eighteen months after their COVID-19 diagnosis.

They found that those with SARS-CoV-2 inside their nose and saliva for more than 28 days tend to have Long COVID symptoms of brain fog and muscle pains that lasted for at least three months.

Bottomline: Adults with SARS-CoV-2 viruses present inside the nose and saliva for more than 28 days will tend to have Long COVID symptoms of brain fog and muscle pains.

The research is available as a preprint at BioRxiv and has not been peer-reviewed. To me, their conclusion makes sense. The longer the virus stays in the body, the more chance it can do more damage.

This makes it critical to have early treatment for COVID-19 once diagnosed. An inexpensive way to get rid of the viruses is by nasal irrigation with povidone-iodine and deep gargling.

Research showed that viruses die in 20 seconds upon contact with povidone-iodine.

Nasal Povidone Iodine Works Great for the Prevention and Early Treatment of COVID-19!

The mechanical cleansing of the inside of the nose allows the body’s front-line defense to do its job. It also works for other respiratory viruses like influenza and RSV – Nasal rinse and deep gargle stop viral respiratory infections in their tracks

I wrote an article on the proper technique to maximize the benefit of nasal sprays based on research by mechanical engineers — A better technique for nasal sprays.
