A study shows that other occupations other than health care are at the highest risk of getting COVID-19.
The study authors are from the Department of Occupational Medicine at Århus University Hospital in Denmark. 2.4 million employees, 20-69 years of age, were evaluated.
Men’s OCCUPATIONS with the highest risk for COVID-19
In men, the largest occupational groups with increased risk included shelf-fillers. They are retail store workers that ensure that shelves and product displays are stocked and often assist as checkout operators and primary school teachers.
Other groups included daycare workers, police officers, corrections officers, ambulance drivers, machine operators within food production, residential and healthcare workers, servers, and fast food operators.
Gaming workers (bookmakers and casino croupiers), hotel managers, and animal producers were among the highest relative risk.
A range of healthcare occupations and bus- and taxi drivers did not appear with increased risk, and no disciplines within construction were represented.
Men in occupations with decreased risk were primarily employed in construction, manufacturing, and retail trade.
The table below shows the full results of the occupations of men at high risk for getting Covid-19. n represents the number of workers that tested COVID positive.
The numerical values on the right column are the incidence rate ratios. The higher the values from 1.0, the greater the risk.
For example, the Incidence Rate Ratio of 1.11. means that shelf fillers have a 1.11 times higher risk than the reference group.
The reference group is composed of employees that work from home or not
working with others.
Women’s occupations at highest risk for COVID-19
Women’s largest occupations with increased risk were home-based personal care workers, healthcare assistants and social work associate professionals, healthcare workers such as nurses, medical doctors and secretaries, laboratory technicians and imaging operators, dentists and dental assistants, physiotherapists, and psychologists.
Also included are teachers, receptionists, and shelf fillers.
The two tables below are women’s occupations with the highest risk for Covid-19.
According to the authors, some professions, like health care, prison and security guards, police officers, waitpersons and bartenders, luggage porters, musicians, and many others, tend to be tested more and may have introduced bias in the study. That is just unavoidable, considering the contact they have with people.
I hope this list will help you to know how much you are at risk for Covid-19.
