Big study confirms Vitamin D deficiency leads to worse COVID-19

A new study from Spain supports the need for adequate Vitamin D levels to prevent severe COVID-19.

Vitamin D is usually associated with preventing osteoporosis and increasing bone strength. However, newer studies show vitamin D’s critical role in fighting infections and improving heart muscle contractility and anti-thrombotic effects.

More about the role of vitamin D for SARS-CoV-2 infection at Adequate Vitamin D Prevents Severe COVID-19

The authors are from the Infanta Sofía University Hospital and the European University of Madrid. The paper just came out on October 28, 2022, and is still in preprint.

The study population is from the University Hospital of Infanta Sofia in Madrid, Spain, with COVID-19 diagnosis from March 2020 to March 2021.

In a study of 36,261 subjects who had COVID-19 infection and 7.14% had vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D deficiency is a vitamin D blood level < 30mg/dl.

Groups most likely with Vitamin D deficiency

Those with severe COVID-19 and Vitamin  D deficiency tend to be:

  1. Women
  2. Older than 80
  3. Nursing home residents
  4. Those that need walking assistance (walker and cane)

Vitamin D deficiency is found in the groups mentioned above because of low sun exposure, nutritional disorders, or chronic kidney disease.

According to the authors, the confinement due to the lockdowns imposed in the last two years of the pandemic may have increased vitamin D deficiency in this group of patients, mainly because of reduced sun exposure and worsening of underlying nutritional disorders.

Consequences of Vitamin d deficiency with COVID-19

Vitamin D deficiency increases the risk of COVID-19 hospitalization, intensive care unit admission, and a higher risk of dying from COVID-19.

Regarding clinical course, a higher number of subjects with COVID-19 and vitamin D deficiency required hospitalization Odds Ratio (OR) 2.41 [95%CI 2.22-2-61], intensive unit care (ICU) OR 2.22 [95% CI 1.64-3.02], had a longer mean hospital stay 3.94 (2.29) p=0.02 and higher mortality OR 1.82 [95%CI 1.66-2.01].)

The usefulness of vitamin D is the reason why it is part of the FLCCC protocols for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19.

Vitamin D is also part of Dr. Peter McCullogh’s Early Treatment Protocol and the late Dr. Vladimir Zelenko’s COVID-19 Treatment Protocol

Vitamin D is not part of the CDC recommendation for COVID-19 treatment. Vitamin D is also conspicuously absent in the US FDA, Health and Human Services, and the National Institute of Health recommended treatment. Why?

Because vitamin D is off-patent, government agencies are controlled by big pharma, and big pharma will not make any money from promoting vitamin D.
