Introduction
This article details a case report of patients developing rare, life-threatening Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN) after taking Metronidazole and Mebendazole—even when taken six weeks apart.

🏭 Isang Karaniwang Araw sa Taiwan, 1996…
Isang grupo ng kababaihang Pilipinong manggagawa sa isang electronics factory sa Taiwan ang biglang dinala sa ospital. Ang kanilang balat ay nagkaroon ng matitinding pantal at paltos, sinabayan ng lagnat at pananakit ng katawan. Sa kasamaang palad, isa sa kanila ang pumanaw.
Ang naging sanhi? Hindi aksidente, hindi rin virus—kundi kombinasyon ng dalawang gamot na madalas natin iniinom kapag may bulate o impeksyon: metronidazole at mebendazole.
⚠️ Ano ang SJS at TEN?
Ang Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) at Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN) ay bihira ngunit nakamamatay na kondisyon sa balat na dulot ng maling reaksyon ng katawan sa gamot.
- SJS – kumakalat sa mas mababa sa 10% ng balat
- TEN – mas malubha, umaabot sa higit 30% ng balat
Kasama sa mga sintomas ang malalalim na sugat, paltos, pamumula ng balat, at pananakit ng bibig at mata. Sa malulubhang kaso, ito ay maaaring ikamatay.

Para makapasa, marami sa kanila ang uminom ng gamot na pampurga kahit walang reseta—minsan ay sabay pa ang metronidazole at mebendazole.
Makalipas ang ilang linggo, sunod-sunod ang kaso ng SJS/TEN sa parehong pabrika.
🧪 Anong Natuklasan ng Pag-aaral?
- Ang mga uminom ng parehong gamot sa loob ng anim na linggo ay 9.5x mas mataas ang tsansang magka-SJS/TEN.
- Mas mataas ang panganib kapag mas maraming dose ng metronidazole ang ininom.
- Hindi virus o ibang sakit ang sanhi—gamot talaga ang salarin.

- Huwag uminom ng gamot nang walang payo ng doktor.
- Iwasang pagsabayin ang metronidazole at mebendazole.
