Why I Built This Site—and How It Survives

I’m a retired physician.
After decades of caring for people once they were already sick, I became convinced that much of what I was treating could have been prevented years earlier.

That belief is why I built Don’t Get Sick.

This site exists to help people understand how the body actually works—blood sugar, metabolism, exercise, aging, and prevention—before disease takes hold. Everything here is written for people who want clear explanations, not quick fixes or marketing slogans.

I don’t sell supplements or promote my own products.
I don’t accept pharmaceutical sponsorships.
I don’t write paid reviews.

That independence is intentional.

Why This Site Is Different

Most health websites are funded by advertising, affiliate links, or sponsored content. That model rewards attention—not accuracy—and urgency—not prevention.

I chose a different approach.

The articles here are long, research-based, and deliberately calm. They don’t chase trends. They don’t promise miracles. They are meant to remain useful years from now.

That helps readers.
It does not help search algorithms.

Because this site avoids clickbait, sponsored content, and paid promotion, it grows mainly through readers sharing it rather than through search engines.

The Hidden Cost of “Free”

This site looks free—and for readers, it largely is. But keeping it online is not.

Running Don’t Get Sick costs over $100 every month, just to operate. That includes:

  • Hosting and security
  • Publishing and maintenance tools
  • Writing and editing software
  • AI tools for accessibility and education
  • Image and audio hosting
  • Backups and ongoing upkeep

This does not include my time, which I consider a personal contribution.

Some articles contain Amazon affiliate links. If you use them, the site earns a small commission at no extra cost to you. These links do not influence what I write or recommend.

Most readers assume this site is already funded.
It isn’t.

Why I Keep Advertising to a Minimum

Advertising changes behavior.

It rewards shorter attention, emotional hooks, and product-driven conclusions. Preventive medicine doesn’t work that way.

Clear thinking takes space.
Good explanations take time.
Accuracy is quieter than marketing.

That is why this site is intentionally ad-light and reader-supported.

A Simple Reality

If you’ve read more than a few articles here, this site has likely already helped you more than it has cost you.

Help might mean:

  • Understanding blood sugar differently
  • Rethinking exercise or aging
  • Avoiding unnecessary medications
  • Recognizing problems earlier
  • Feeling less confused and less afraid

That is the purpose of this work.

How You Can Support It (If You Choose)

If Don’t Get Sick has been useful to you, there are three meaningful ways to help:

  1. Make a small donation, one-time or monthly
  2. Become a monthly supporter, even at a modest level
  3. Share the site with one person who would benefit

On phones and tablets, the support box appears near the bottom of the page.

There is no obligation.
Only an invitation.

What Support Makes Possible

This site isn’t going away—but without reader support, some limits are unavoidable:

  • Fewer new in-depth articles
  • Less time for research and updates
  • More restrictions on free access over time

I prefer to be transparent about that.

Thank You

Whether you donate, share an article, or simply read thoughtfully—thank you.

This site exists because some people value careful, independent health education. If that includes you, I’m grateful you’re here.

Thank you for scrolling all the way down.
