Yogurt and Intermittent Fasting Reduced Body Toxins

Daily life exposes us to toxins. As they accumulate, they eventually exert detrimental effects on the body.
These poisons are everywhere. Phthalates are in plastic bottles. 2-hydroxybutyric acid or 2HIB are in gasoline additives that end as air pollution. In time, these toxins accumulate in the body fat.
Intermittent fasting reduces body fat. However, as the fat dissolves, toxins are released. Once free, the toxins travel to other parts of the body and exert their poisonous effects. What is the solution?
A case report was published in the Madridge Journal of Immunology about a 72-year-old retired physician who is a lifelong marathoner diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia or CLL. Dr. Jerry Blythe is the subject in the study and one of the authors.
Dr. JB did intermittent fasting for three months (see Table 1 and 2 below) and took 100 ml of probiotic yogurt daily.

Results

Dr. JB’s body weight decreased from 70.7 to 66.2 Kg (6.4%)

Serum nagalase, a marker of inflammation,  cancer cell proliferation, and systemic inflammation, was also reduced.

Serum Thyroid stimulation hormone or TSH values significantly decreased from 7.83 to 5.2 µIU/ml (33.6%). High TSH levels mean a low functioning thyroid. Thyroid hormones dictate the rate of metabolism of the body. High TSH means the whole body is working slower than expected.

White blood cell or leukocyte count decreased from 58 to 54.9 (cells x 103/µL) (5.3%). A decrease in the WBCs reflects less inflammation.

The lymphocytes decreased from 94 to 90% (4.4%). This decrease is significant since the subject has chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

The platelets favorably increased from 93 to 125 (cells x 103/µL) (34.4%). Platelets are responsible for forming healthy blood clots needed to start the repair of injuries in the body.

Non-metal toxins excretion in the urine was increased after three months. (see table below)

What explains the improvement in the Thyroid test?

The authors explained that the thyroid function test (TSH) improves due to the increased excretion of toxins. These toxins are known to act as thyroid endocrine disruptors.

Phthalates (MEP in the table) are usually in plastic bottles. They bind to thyroid hormone receptors and change the signaling of thyroid hormones.

Perchlorate interferes with iodine uptake with resulting in increased production of TSH as a compensatory mechanism.

Effects of yogurt

Lactobacillus acidophilus is bacteria that are in the probiotic yogurt used in this study.  Lactobacilli have anti-oxidant effects and increase the levels of the anti-oxidants, glutathione reductase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase. Anti-oxidants reduce excess free radicals in the body that causes cell damage.

Lactobacilli also decrease malondialdehyde which is a highly reactive compound. Malondialdehyde causes toxic stress in cells and forms advanced lipoxidation end products (ALE) that cause mutagenic DNA. Malondialdehyde is also found in many foods. It is present in high levels in rancid foods.

The other probiotic strains protect against metal toxicity by decreasing toxins in the liver and kidney. They do this by maintaining the levels of glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase. Both of which are essential anti-oxidants.

Lactobacilli strains remove toxins like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, heterocyclic aromatic amines, amino acid pyrolysates, and mycotoxins by physical binding.

Last but not least, probiotics improve kidney function and make the excretion of the toxins more effectively.

Concluding thoughts

Intermittent fasting has multiple health benefits but has criticism. That critique is the release of toxins with fat loss. The use of probiotic yogurt is inexpensive and answered that problem to help eliminate the toxins for good.
