Coronavirus (CoV) is responsible for 10-30% of common colds. The most popular CoV are the SARS virus in 2003 with 10% mortality and the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) with a death rate of 34.5%
CoV is back on the headlines again. This time as the Wuhan coronavirus or 2019-nCoV by the Centers for Disease Control. Coronavirus is named because it looks like it has a crown. As of today, there have been 17 fatalities.
Presently, there are no vaccines or anti-viral developed for coronavirus. This has led scientists to start checking out several herbs that may be developed in the future into medicines.
Keep in mind that these substances have only been tested in the laboratories, and no animal or human tests have been done. There are no formal recommendations to use them as of yet. It is still useful information to know.
CoV multiplies fast in the lungs and the stomach and intestines. The more virus, the sicker you get. The herbs are in their scientific names and common names.
- Cibotium barometz – golden chicken fern or woolly fern grows in China and Southeast Asia.
- Gentiana scabra – known as Korean gentian or Japanese gentian seen in the United States and Japan.
- Dioscorea batatas or Chinese Yam grows in China and East Asia
- Cassia tora or Foetid cassia, The Sickle Senna, Wild Senna – grows in India and Central America
- Taxillus Chinensis – Mulberry Mistletoe
From the table above, all have anti coronavirus activity except for garlic. One plant that is effective but not listed is Stinging nettle.
The following medicines are not officially recommended against coronavirus. Their anti-coronavirus properties are proven so far only in laboratories
- Indomethacin – is a commonly used drug against gout. It was tested against the SARS virus.
- Chloroquine is an anti-malarial drug
- Niclosamide is used as a deworming medicine.
