Any Science behind Elderberry for Influenza and Covid-19?

Elderberry (Sambucus Nigra) is an over the counter nutritional supplement that is used when someone has a cold.

Many studies support that elderberry is useful for the flu.

Elderberry for influenza

  1. Prevents the multiplication of the influenza virus [1], [3]
  2. Elderberry increases the body’s ability to fight infection by an increase in the production of cytokines.[1],[5]
  3. Antibodies against influenza were also increased after using elderberry. [1], [4],[5]
  4. Symptoms of the flu were relieved earlier with elderberry [2],[4],[5]

Personal note: I have used and recommended the elderberry capsule for many years and have not had a severe case of influenza-even while working in the emergency room

No studies about Elderberry and Covid-19

My search for the use of elderberry for Covid-19 ended with nothing. That may be because the virus is new. The epidemic started in November 2019. In a short time, it has infected more than 227 thousand and cause more than 9,000 deaths worldwide.

Most of the studies about the new coronavirus are focused on its properties and hospital treatment.

Prevention of Covid-19

Hand washing, wearing a mask, and social distancing are the best ways to prevent infection and spread of Covid-19.
