Liquor stores will remain open under New York mandate, association says

The New York State Liquor Store Association reminded business owners and patrons on Friday that all liquor shops are considered essential and will remain open under the new mandate.

“Liquor stores have been deemed an essential business and may remain open. You do not need to reduce your workforce. This applies to all SLA-licensed entities as per the SLA,” the association said in a statement.

There is a risk of an alcohol withdrawal syndrome if they close liquor stores. A 2012-2013 data shows New York State has a 6.65% or approximately 1.1 million individuals with alcohol dependence.

With delays in testing hampering the country’s ability to accurately track the new coronavirus and shelter-in-place orders keeping many Americans at home, startups are swooping in with a seemingly ideal solution: at-home tests.

Over the next week, at least four startups are launching the first at-home tests for Covid-19. The companies, whose tests have been mostly greenlit — but not approved in the conventional sense — by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration under new guidelines instituted for the coronavirus crisis, aim for their diagnostics to offer some certainty to people who have up until now been unable to get tested as a result of the shortage of test kits. Most of the companies have put their other efforts on hold to focus on coronavirus.

With the current high demand for hand sanitizer, the US Food and Drug Administration said it will not take action against companies who are not FDA regulated and who produce hand sanitizers.   

FDA Commissioner Dr. Stephen Hahn said, the recent guidance will “provide flexibility to help meet demand during this outbreak. We will continue to work with manufacturers, compounders, state boards of pharmacy and the public to increase the supply of alcohol-based hand sanitizer available to Americans.”

Italy sees biggest day-to-day rise in coronavirus deaths

ROME (AP) — Italy has recorded its highest day-to-day-rise in the number of deaths of people infected with the new coronavirus.

Civil Protection Chief Angelo Borrelli said Friday the country recorded 627 more deaths in the 24 hours since Italy surpassed China on Thursday as the nation with the most COVID-19-related deaths. The total now stands at 4,032.

This brewery will produce hand sanitizer for Delaware

The state of Delaware and the Dogfish Head Craft Brewery are teaming up to make more hand sanitizer available to the state’s government, according to a statement from Delaware Gov. John Carney.

Dogfish Head will sell the sanitizer to the state of Delaware at market price, and 100% of the profits will go into a fund to support Delawareans affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, the statement said

Medical organization calls on Trump administration to address “critical shortages” of equipment and tests

The American Medical Association has called on the Trump administration to “leverage every tool at its disposal” to address a shortage of protective equipment and coronavirus tests. 

In a statement Friday, the doctors’ group said that “critical shortages in test kits and personal protective equipment (PPE) remain unaddressed.”

Yesterday the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated, for the second time in a week, guidance for healthcare workers on using face masks, including N95 respirators and surgical masks, while treating possible COVID-19 patients in conventional, contingency, and crisis settings.

To the surprise of many, the guidance recommended that nurses, doctors, and staff fashion homemade masks out of scarves and bandanas if there is a shortage of face masks in clinics and hospitals.

Brown: Virus eviction moratorium, asks for REAL ID extension

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Oregon Gov. Kate Brown said Friday that during the coronavirus outbreak she wants a statewide eviction moratorium, to suspend enforcement on expired automobile tabs and driver licenses and has asked the federal government for a one-year extension for compliance the REAL ID act.

ROME (Reuters) – The death toll from an outbreak of coronavirus in Italy has leapt by 627 to 4,032, officials said on Friday, an increase of 18.4% – by far the largest daily rise in absolute terms since the contagion emerged a month ago.

Connecticut governor asks all non-essential employees to “stay home to stay safe”-CNN

Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont has asked all non-essential employees to “stay home to stay safe” at least for the “foreseeable future.”

This announcement Friday comes after the state confirmed 194 Covid-19 cases and four deaths.

This is an executive order and businesses could be subjected to fines if they stay open, Lamont said. The order has not been officially signed yet, but will be later today and guidance will be issued, officials said at the presser.

A 38-year-old man has become the first person to test positive for coronavirus in Zimbabwe, the country’s ministry of health reported Friday. 

“The patient is a 38-year-old Caucasian male resident of Victoria Falls, who had traveled to Manchester, United Kingdom on the 7th of March 2020 and returned to his home in Victoria Falls on the 15th of March 2020 via South Africa,” the health ministry said.

Walz: Minnesota may need to shelter in place; cases hit 115

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Gov. Tim Walz said Friday that he might have to follow California’s lead at some point and order residents to shelter in place to try to slow the spread of COVID-19 as the number of confirmed cases in the state rose above 100.

Illinois governor issues “stay-at-home” order for entire state

llinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker has issued a “stay-at-home” order Friday for the entire state to prevent the spread of coronavirus. 

Pritzker said the order goes into effect at 5 p.m. CT on Saturday and lasts through April 7.

MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russian scientists have begun testing prototypes of potential vaccines against the new coronavirus on animals in a laboratory in Siberia, Russia’s consumer health regulator said on Friday.

Russia has reported 199 coronavirus cases so far, less than in many other European countries, but the figure has risen sharply in recent days. One person diagnosed with the virus has died.

MANILA, Philippines (4th update, 1:24 p.m.) — In a move to centralize efforts as private hospitals are reeling from a drastically reduced workforce and resources, Health Secretary Francisco Duque designated two public hospitals as exclusive facilities for COVID-19 patients.

Duque on Friday directed public hospitals UP-Philippine General Hospital to transform one building and the Dr. Jose M. Rodriguez Memorial Hospital to serve those gravely ill with the novel coronavirus infection.

Positive COVID-19 cases now 29 in Erie County, new list of public exposure locations released-WIVB

ERIE COUNTY, N.Y. (WIVB)–The Erie County Department of Health says there are now 29 positive COVID-19 cases in the county.

According to the Public Health Lab, specimens were collected from 523 residents.

179 came back negative while there’s 315 still pending from received specimen collection from Erie and outside counties.

Stores set up senior shopping hours amid coronavirus fears

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — As senior citizens deal with anxiety about the coronavirus, grocery store chains and other retailers have come up with a way to ease their fears: shopping times reserved exclusively for them.

Target, Whole Foods, Walmart and Dollar General, as well as supermarkets in Europe, began dedicating early morning shopping times for older customers this week. The theory is that allowing seniors to shop among smaller crowds could reduce their chances of acquiring the virus and give them first crack at buying hand sanitizer and other products that have been hard to find because of panic shopping.

‘One of us needs to be at home’: Parents prepared to take leave or work from home to care for children on leave of absence

SINGAPORE: Parents who have recently returned from a family holiday overseas said they will take leave or work from home to care for their children.

This follows a government announcement on Thursday (Mar 19) that all students and school staff members returning from travel during the March school holidays will be placed on a 14-day leave of absence.
