UK announces lockdown-CNN
The British Prime Minister has ordered the UK to lockdown to contain the spread of coronavirus.
Calling the virus the “biggest threat” the UK has faced in decades, Boris Johnson said people across the country must “stay home” in order to halt the growth of Covid-19 and protect the health care system.
“Without a huge national effort to halt the growth of this virus, there will come a moment when no health service in the world could possibly cope; because there won’t be enough ventilators, enough intensive care beds, enough doctors and nurses,” Johnson said in a televised address.

BERGAMO: Police in the Italian city of Bergamo have brought much-needed help to people suffering from the coronavirus by redistributing oxygen cylinders used by people who did not survive the virus.
Bergamo, in the northern Lombardy region, is now Italy’s worst-affected province, with over 6,000 infections. With hospitals overflowing, many sufferers are kept at home, but desperately need oxygen.
New York state is now an epicentre of global pandemic
NEW YORK (NYTIMES) – Three weeks after its first coronavirus infection was discovered, the New York City region reached an alarming milestone on Sunday (March 22): It now accounts for roughly 5 per cent of the world’s confirmed cases, making it an epicentre of the global pandemic and increasing pressure on officials to take more drastic measures.

MADRID (Reuters) – Spain has nearly 4,000 health workers infected with the coronavirus, more than one in ten of total confirmed cases, officials said on Monday as the toll rose in Europe’s second-worst affected country after Italy.
Like in other countries hit hard by the virus, nurses, doctors and other health workers say they are not getting enough protective kits. Authorities and companies are scrambling to manufacture, buy and distribute more.
“We have some data we do not like, because we should try to control it, such as having 3,910 health workers affected,” health emergency chief Fernando Simon told a news conference.

Trapped in paradise: Tourists stranded by virus seek visa extensions
KUTA, Indonesia (Reuters) – Travelers stranded by coronavirus in some of Southeast Asia’s idyllic tourism hotspots are trying to extend visas as more countries enforce travel restrictions that in some cases make it impossible to go home.
The total number of stranded tourists is not known, but scenes of frustration are playing out in several countries.
On the Indonesian resort island of Bali – famed for its beaches, terraced rice fields and cultural sites – hundreds of tourists in face masks queued up outside the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office in the tourist area of Kuta seeking legal permission to extend their stay.
It would be interesting to know if the virus spreads slower on a beach. The open air disperses the virus and gets blown to the sea.

South Korea reports lowest daily number of infections since peaking last month
The number of “silent carriers” – people who are infected by the new coronavirus but show delayed or no symptoms – could be as high as one-third of those who test positive, according to classified Chinese government data seen by the South China Morning Post.
That could further complicate the strategies being used by countries to contain the virus, which has infected more than 300,000 people and killed more than 14,000 globally. The approach taken by China and South Korea of testing anyone who has had close contact with a patient – regardless of whether the person has symptoms – may explain why the two Asian countries seem to have checked the spread of the virus. Hong Kong is extending testing to airport arrivals in the city, even if travellers have no symptoms. Meanwhile in most European countries and the US, where only those with symptoms are tested, the number of infections continues to rapidly rise

SINGAPORE – In a move to help the international community combat the coronavirus pandemic, the Government will be making the software for its contact tracing application TraceTogether, which has already been installed by more than 620,000 people, freely available to developers around the world.
In a Facebook post on Monday (March 23), Minister-in-charge of the Smart Nation Initiative Vivian Balakrishnan said that the app, developed by the Government Technology Agency (GovTech) and the Ministry of Health, will be open sourced.
This means that the software’s source code will be made freely available and may be redistributed and modified.
Launched last Friday, the TraceTogether app can identify people who have been within 2m of coronavirus patients for at least 30 minutes, using wireless Bluetooth technology. Its developers say the app is useful when those infectedcannot recall whom they had been in close proximity with for an extended duration.
Virus pandemic an unprecedented test for a young generation
“It’s a lot of fear with family members and stuff,” Jalen said. “I think a lot of us don’t think it will affect us, but it’s a worry.”
As this crisis unfolds, her generation likely be tested like never before, especially those whose families are already on the edge, financially and health-wise.
“It’s going to make them feel differently about their mortality, possibly, what the world offers, what security looks like,” said Cathy Cohen, a political science professor at the University of Chicago, who regularly tracks the views of young people.

Internal memos by chief surgeon at New York-Presbyterian Hospital revealed new details about the coming threat-ABC
Medical experts in New York do not expect the number of cases to peak for another 22 to 32 days, the memo written by Dr. Craig Smith says, and the supplies of masks, equipment and available beds is well short of the impending need. He estimated the crush of patients will require from 700 to 934 intensive-care beds.
“The lower estimate exceeds our ICU capacity, even with surge construction,” said Smith, a cardiac surgery pioneer who has headed the hospital’s surgery department since 2010.
