VOA News reports that the World Health Organization has warned that there is a risk that monkeypox will be established in countries where it is not usually endemic. That means monkeypox will continue to increase and persist outside Africa.

According to the Associated Press, the US government ordered  500,000 more Jynneos shots from Bavarian Nordic to be delivered late this year Jynneos doses from Bavarian Nordic to be handed over late this year.

Right now, the US has 72,000 Jynneos doses, and will get 300,000 more doses from its manufacturer, Bavarian Nordic, over the next several weeks, said Dawn O’Connell. She oversees the government’s stockpile of emergency vaccines and treatments.

Jynneos is a smallpox vaccine that can also be used to lessen the symptoms in those exposed to monkeypox cases.

WHO recommendation

Currently, the World Health Organization does not recommend routine vaccination against monkeypox.

Monkeypox is usually self-limiting, with the symptoms lasting from 2 to 4 weeks. As of today, there have been no deaths recorded with the current global outbreak.

There are two kinds of monkeypox. The West African clade has a milder course with 0-3% mortality, and the Congo clade is more fatal with a 10% fatality rate. The circulating variety now is the West African type.

Risk of Monkeypox Vaccines

In the FDA package insert of Jynneos, cardiac adverse events of special interest were reported to occur in 1.3% among those who have not received the smallpox vaccine before (smallpox vaccine-naïve). However, that risk goes up to 2.1% for those JYNNEOS recipients who were smallpox vaccine-experienced.

The cardiac adverse events were rapid heart rate, electrocardiogram abnormality (T wave inversion, ST-segment elevation, T wave abnormalities), and palpitations.  EKG changes are highly suggestive of heart muscle injuries.

In summary, it is not recommended to get a routine vaccination against monkeypox because the risk is greater than the benefit.

But if you have been exposed to someone with a definite monkeypox diagnosis, talk to your doctor immediately. Jynneos is not available from your local pharmacies.
