Health information can be carried or obtained by the following

    • Paper
    • USB Flash Drive
    • Electronic file attachment sent thru the internet

The simplest way will be to write or print (better) with a computer on a small piece of paper, back to back, and insert in a wallet. Write all the necessary information.  If you are concerned about privacy in case it gets lost or stolen, then just put the initials. Add the date of birth.

Laminating is very good in case the paper gets wet. If the paramedics have to be called for emergencies, make sure that this paper form is readily available. A good place will be in front of the refrigerator.

You can also print it in booklet form on a computer to make it compact. That makes four pages to a sheet of paper. The 12 lead EKG needs to be on an 8.5 x 11 size paper form for easier comparison with a new EKG.

The other way to save and retrieve the information is to write and save the information on a computer and save it in a word processor file. It can be sent as an attachment to an email that can be accessed by phone and downloaded. Make sure that the format you use is the more common one like .doc format. Windows is used in the majority of hospital systems.

The digital file should be updated as needed and may also be sent to a circle of trusted family or friends. That way the contact person can be called and the information can be sent by email to hospital staff in the emergency room in case the paper file is not with the patient. Bear in mind though that the information may be intercepted by another party as it goes thru the internet.  ProtonMail is free and encrypts emails from both the sender and receiver.

USB Flash Drives are Compact and Portable

If the doctor or nurse asks you the same questions from your list, do not be annoyed because they are just diligent.

Language considerations

It is worth translating the information in the country you are planning to visit.

This makes the generic name of the medications more important because brand names change from one country to another.
