How to stop bleeding if on nattokinase

Nattokinase has anticoagulant properties. If you take nattokinase and have a cut, the bleeding may be more profuse than usual. It is the same as in any other drugs like aspirin or warfarin or newer ones like dabigatran.

I have been taking nattokinase 2,000 FU every day since I have been writing about it. One night, I cut my thumb as I was removing the skin from a piece of bacon I had just finished smoking. I was tired by that time and got careless with my technique.

The best time to remove the skin from the bacon is right after smoking. That way, after making a few cuts, you can just pull the skin off the fat.

My bacon tastes the best, in my opinion. Not too sweet, not too salty. They are better than store-bought.

The superficial cut was small and about 3 mm long, but it bled a lot. No pulsatile arterial bleeding since the cut was shallow but the amount of blood was concerning even for a seasoned emergency room doctor like me.

Stopping the bleeding

The solution was to rinse with cold running water, and I applied a clean paper towel directly on top of the cut. The pressure should be on top of the cut itself. Not on the side, or else it won’t stop.

You will know that you are in the right spot if there is a bit of a sting when you press. Then elevate the cut area above the heart. If the cut is on the legs, lay down and elevate the legs.

Elevation decreases the hydrostatic pressure within the bleeding vessel and will help stop the bleeding. It took about five to ten minutes. Then I applied a band-aid. A triple antibiotic is optional unless it had dirt on it.

Nattokinase has thrombolytic properties too. That means it can dissolve blood clots. However, at the 2,000 Fibrin unit dose, it is not high enough to dissolve the blood clot that formed.

When to go to the urgent care or emergency room.

If the wound is grossly dirty, it should be cleaned well, or it will get infected and not heal. Getting it cleaned properly is best done by a professional. And the best choice is to go to urgent care. But you must apply direct pressure and elevate until you get there.

If the edges of the cut are not apposed or long or deep, or if there is pulsatile bleeding, then say high to your nearest urgent care.

Two things to remember when you have a cut. Direct pressure and elevation.
