Natto: An application of the 80-20 Rule

The 80-20 rule, also known as the Pareto Principle, says that 80% of outcomes or outputs result from 20% of all causes for any given event.

The ratio does not have to be 80-20 all the time. Essentially, it says that a massive amount of results can happen from a small amount of effort.

Regarding health, I have written about two things that can do that—intermittent fasting and exercise, and both can address the most common cause of chronic illnesses and deaths globally.

The 80-20 Rule for Health

After doing a lot of reading about natto and nattokinase, I conclude that this over-the-counter supplement can be useful for the most common and deadliest illnesses and, therefore, is an application of the 80-20 Principle.

Natto

Natto is a Japanese food made from fermented soybean with a thousand-year history of safety.

What is in natto?

Nattokinase contains enzymes, and the most researched is nattokinase. It also contains isoflavones, vitamin K2 and Bacillus Subtilis. A non-disease-causing bacteria that is found in the environment and the human gut.

Natto Properties

Scientific research has shown that nattokinase has the following properties.

  • Anticoagulant
  • Lipid-lowering
  • Fibrinolytic (prevents blood clots)
  • Anti-thrombotic (dissolves blood clots)
  • Anti atherosclerosis
  • Improves insulin sensitivity
  • Degrades SARS-CoV-2 proteins
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Neuroprotective
  • Anti-cancer – secondary to polyamines like putrescine, spermine, and spermidine content

Working together, natto’s properties have been found to have great potential for the following.

    1. Cardiovascular Diseases (CVD)
    2. Diabetes
    3. Osteoporosis
    4. Alzheimer’s Disease
    5. COVID-19
    6. Post-COVID Vaccine Syndrome
    7. Long Haul COVID

CDC data shows that heart disease, cancer, COVID-19, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, and kidney diseases are among the top causes of death in the US.

Cardiovascular Diseases are not just heart attacks or strokes. Cleveland Clinic lists the following as manifestations of cardiovascular disease.

    • Arrhythmia: A problem with your heart’s electrical conduction system, leading to abnormal heart rhythms or heart rates.
    • Coronary artery disease: A problem with your heart’s blood vessels, such as blockages.
    • Heart failure: Problem with heart pumping/relaxing functions, leading to fluid buildup and shortness of breath.
    • Peripheral artery disease: Issue with the blood vessels of your arms, legs, or abdominal organs, such as narrowing or blockages.
    • Aortic disease: A problem with the large blood vessel that directs blood from your heart to your brain and the rest of your body, such as dilatation or aneurysm.
    • Pericardial disease: Problem with the lining of your heart, including pericarditis and pericardial effusion.
    • Cerebrovascular disease: Issue with the blood vessels that deliver blood to your brain, such as narrowing or blockages.
    • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT): Blockage in your veins, vessels that bring blood back from your brain/body to your heart.

The following are some Diabetes complications.

    • Myocardial infarctions
    • Cerebrovascular accidents
    • Peripheral artery disease
    • Kidney failure
    • Blindness
    • Infections
    • Diabetic ketoacidosis
    • Hyperosmolar nonketotic coma
    • Neuropathy (numbness)

Again, the complications combine their effects to produce more problems. For example, numb feet, weak immune system, and poor blood supply result in unnoticed foot infections that become gangrenous and need an amputation.

As an inexpensive supplement, natto could do the work of:

      • Aspirin/ Plavix (anticoagulant)
      • Statins or cholesterol-lowering drugs (can lower total cholesterol, triglyceride, and LDL)
      • Vitamin k2 supplements
      • Probiotic supplement – The Bacillus Subtilis in Natto increases the number of good anti-inflammatory bacteria and lowers inflammatory bacteria in the gut microbiome.
      • Diabetes drugs by increasing insulin sensitivity.
      • Antihypertensive drugs. Natto can lower blood pressure in several ways.
        • Nattokinase works like an ACE inhibitor (lisinopril) by blocking the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE)
        • Diuretic effect – improving insulin sensitivity decreases salt retention and allows the removal of excess water thru urination.
        • The removal of calcium in the arteries by vitamin K2 makes them more compliant and eases the work of the heart to reduce and prevent heart enlargement, which is seen in heart failure.
        • Quickly distensible arteries make the heart more efficient and lower the heart rate. Similar to the effect of beta blockers like metoprolol.
      • COVID-19 prevention. Nattokinase can block the attachment of the spike protein to the ACE2 receptors and degrade the spike proteins too.

      Summary

Nattokinase, Vitamin K2, and Bacillus Subtilis in natto could effectively address the deadliest diseases of our time. The cost to treat them in one’s lifetime can run into the hundreds of thousands.

Taking nattokinase as a supplement like Best Naturals can be an alternative since it contains vitamin K2.

Bacillus subtilis probiotics are also available.

The NSK-SD nattokinase formulation in Doctor’s Best is an alternative for those on warfarin (Coumadin, Jantovia) that cannot take vitamin K2.
