Bromelain for Long COVID and Post Vaccine Syndrome

This article discusses bromelain’s potential uses, particularly for those with Long Covid and Post-Vaccine syndrome.

Bromelain

Bromelain is used to reduce nasal congestion, as a pain killer, and digestive issues.

It comes from the stem of the pineapple plant. It is inexpensive to manufacture since it comes from a waste by-product.

Bromelain can be absorbed in the intestines and has been detected in the blood with intact biological activity after oral intake.[2]

It has proteolytic enzymes that dissolve mucus in the nasal passages and sinuses. The same protein lysing enzymes are used with N-acetylcysteine to destroy spike proteins.

Bromelain and Acetylcysteine Combined Destroy the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein

Bromelain also has anti-inflammatory, immune-modulating, and anticoagulant effects. These properties are helpful for cardiovascular health, cancer prevention, autoimmune diseases, Long Haul COVID, and Post COVID vaccine syndrome.

Long COVID and Post Vaccine Syndromes

Long COVID, Post COVID, or Long Haul COVID is a condition where the symptoms of COVID-19 persist beyond four weeks. The most common symptoms are brain fog, headaches, muscle pains, tiredness, fever, shortness of breath, and diarrhea. They can last weeks, months, or years.

The post-COVID vaccine syndrome are symptoms that start after a COVID vaccination that any other condition cannot explain. The presentation may be the same as Long COVID but can be more severe.  Treatment is individualized based on the symptoms.

The symptoms of Long COVID and Post vaccine syndromes are due to chronic inflammation in the blood vessels, internal organs, and the skin.

The inflammation stems from the presence of SARS-CoV-2 spike proteins in human cells.

The immune system attacks the foreign spike proteins in human tissues to produce autoimmune conditions

Bromelain is an over-the-counter supplement, and many companies sell it. No single company could profit from conducting a large clinical trial. The body of bromelain research has been chiefly in vitro, animal studies, and case reports.

The following are the health benefits of bromelain.

Anti-inflammatory Effects

Inflammation plays a role in cancer, cardiovascular, and autoimmune diseases. Bromelain suppresses chronic inflammation by decreasing the amount of pro-inflammatory cytokines and increasing the anti-inflammatory molecules.

Seligman found that bromelain lessened and reversed the pathologic effects of inflammation at a dose of 160 mg per day.

The mechanisms are shown below.

Anti-cancer activity

Bromelain stimulates autophagy, slows metastases, and induces cancer cell death by apoptosis. It has anti-cancer action against breast cancer, melanoma, gastric, human monocytic leukemia, epidermoid carcinoma, P388 leukemia, sarcoma (S-37), Ehrlich ascetic tumor, Lewis lung carcinoma, ADC-755 mammary adenocarcinoma cell lines. [1][7]

Bromelain increases the permeability of tissues to chemotherapeutic drugs. Pancreatic cancer is hard to treat due to its dense extracellular matrix.

A study from St. George hospital in Australia showed that bromelain with NAC worked well in all tumor cell lines inoculated with liver and pancreatic cancer and resulted in lower chemotherapy drug doses. This can result in more frequent treatment with higher efficacy.[9]

Rapidly progressive and multifocal cancers also happen after the COVID shots. Two pathologists described their findings in cancer patients and autopsy cases.

Circulatory effects of bromelain

Bromelain prevents blood clot formation by preventing platelet aggregation.[5] A mechanism of action similar to what aspirin does minus the stomach irritation.

Fibrin is a component of blood clots. In already-formed clots, bromelain helps dissolve fibrin.[1]

Bromelain might increase the risk of bleeding before, during, and after dental and surgical operations. Stop using bromelain at least 2 to three weeks before a scheduled surgery. Talk to your doctor if you are taking drugs to thin your blood. These are drugs like warfarin and dabigatran.

Long Haul and Post Vaccine syndromes may have vascular injuries and blood clots.

Cardiovascular effects

Bromelain mitigates atherosclerosis.[8.] Animal studies showed that bromelain might improve the outcome of strokes and heart attacks by preventing reperfusion injury.[3]

Reperfusion injury results from the return of blood flow to previously ischemic tissues like the heart in myocardial infarction or the brain after a stroke. Reperfusion injuries widen the tissue damage on top of the initial insult.

Another way to prevent reperfusion injury is by ischemic preconditioning

Arthritis

Osteoarthritis is an inflammation of the cartilage in the joints. Bromelain has pain-killing and anti-inflammatory properties similar to non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) like Ibuprofen. [1][7]

Soft tissue swelling in osteoarthritis was reduced by 72.4% using bromelain. Four clinical studies showed pain relief using bromelain. [7]

Reactive inflammatory arthritis has been reported after a COVID-19 infection and after COVID jabs.

Asthma

The anti-inflammatory effects of bromelain contribute to its role in asthma alleviation.

Reports of asthma exacerbation after the Pfizer-Biontech injection have been made by Colaneri et al. and Ando et al. Both cases were life-threatening.

In one case, after several episodes of severe asthma attacks, the patient required treatment with mepolizumab, a biologic drug (interleukin-5) antagonist monoclonal antibody.

The second case showed an elevation of eosinophils, indicating a severe allergic reaction to the third dose of the Pfizer jab. Bromelain reduces the number of eosinophils and lymphocytes and relieved asthma symptoms in a mouse study.

Diarrhea

Bromelain is useful in secretory diarrhea and has a protective effect on the lining of the intestinal wall.

Akaishi et al. reported a 46-year-old female with prolonged diarrhea and vomiting after receiving the BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine for COVID-19. Her symptoms persisted for more than six months after the second vaccine dose.

In the same report, a VAERS search showed that diarrhea is observed in about 3% of all vaccine recipients. My VAERS search showed 27,794 cases of diarrhea after COVID shots in the US.

Safety

Like any supplement, bromelain can cause an allergic reaction. People with bleeding disorders and those who take blood thinners should consult their doctors before taking them.

Bromelain can increase the absorption and potency of chemotherapy drugs, antibiotics, ACE inhibitors (lisinopril), benzodiazepines (Valium), certain antidepressants, and opioids, including codeine and barbiturates. [7]

The body can absorb about 12 gm/day of bromelain without any significant side effects[2]

In summary, bromelain has anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and anti-thrombotic properties. It has positive effects on the respiratory, digestive, and circulatory systems.

  1. Might I also suggest looking at the “Doctor’s Best” Bromelain at Amazon… It has a higher potency (3000 GDU/G @ 500mg). That’s about 20% higher concentration.

Also, as Bromelain is a enzyme– I believe that folks using it should take it on an empty stomach. (1hr before meals or 2hrs after)– this helps achieve greater absorption. Dr. Santiano– please feel free to correct me if I am wrong…
