Bromelain and Acetylcysteine Combined Destroy SARS-CoV-2 spike protein

This article discusses the research that combined two over-the-counter substances, Bromelain and NAC. The resulting mix called BromAc can break the bonds that keep the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus together.

The paper was published in Mar 2021, when the COVID jabs were first released. I remember reading this article then, and I put it on my to-do list and somehow got bypassed by other pieces and then forgotten.

This is the first study that shows that something can be taken to remove the spike proteins in the body.

This research is more relevant now than when first published. That’s because now we know that the spike protein can be produced in the body after injection by the mRNA shots.

And the spike protein can last in the body for several months

If the spike protein is chronically present in the body, it can elicit an autoimmune response and form blood clots

The study The Combination of Bromelain and Acetylcysteine (BromAc) Synergistically Inactivates SARS-CoV-2 was done in Australia and France. One of the lead authors is associated with Mucpharm in Sydney, Australia, which makes BromAc.[1]

Bromelain and NAC

BromAc® is used to treat rare cancer, pseudomyxoma peritoneii it is a combination of Bromelain and N-acetyl cysteine (NAC).

Bromelain is a protein-digesting enzyme mixture derived from the pineapple plant’s stem, fruit, and juice.

Studies demonstrate that Bromelain can dissolve fibrin, reduce edema, prevent blood clot formation, and is anti-inflammatory.[2]

Bromelain is useful in chronic sinusitis, asthma, cardiovascular disease, burns, and cancer.

NAC is another supplement. It is also a mucolytic like Bromelain and has other uses for treating acetaminophen (Tylenol) overdose and psychiatric disorders.

NAC combined with another drug is helpful for SARS-CoV-2

In combination with bismuth subsalicylate, the active ingredient in Pepto-Bismol, NAC has the potential for use in hard-to-treat infections.

6 Potential Uses of the Bismuth + NAC combination,

The In vitro study

The study used varied concentrations of Bromelain with a constant NAC concentration of 20mg/ml, Bromelain alone, and NAC alone against a recombinant SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and envelope protein in a cell media.[1]

Results

Treatment with Acetylcysteine on the envelope protein did not alter the protein, whereas treatment with Bromelain at 50 and 100 µg/mL and BromAc at 50 and 100 µg/20 mg/mL also resulted in near complete and complete fragmentation, respectively

The black bands present in 1 and 2 are the spike proteins. NAC alone did not dissolve the spike protein at any concentration.

Bromelain at 50 µg/mL with NAC showed partial spike protein fragmentation. Bromelain at 100 µg/mL with NAC at 20mg/ml fully destroyed the spike protein.

Another finding is that the NAC can dissolve 40% of the disulfide bonds that hold the spike protein together. While Bromelain is known to disrupt glycosidic linkages. that explains how both can unfold the spike glycoprotein.

Disulfide bonds are present in the receptor binding domain (RBD) and on the S2 of the spike protein. The RBD is the part that attaches to human cells, and the S2 undergoes conformational changes to allow the spike protein to bind to the ACE2 receptors.

Meanwhile, the glycosidic bonds are present in a “shield” that covers the spike and stabilizes the receptor-binding domain. Moreover, the glycans present play a role in evading the immune response.

To confirm if the BromAc can neutralize the virus, they measured the cytopathic effects of the SARS-CoV-2 on cell cultures without and with the BromAc.

Cells that did not have BromAc demonstrated cell death, while the cells treated with BromAc did not have cytotoxicity.

Conclusion:

The laboratory study on cell cultures demonstrates that combining Bromelain at 100 µg/mL with NAC at 20mg/ml can completely fragment the spike protein.

Human studies are not yet done to show that it really works for COVID-19. I don’t see any ongoing clinical trials.

Safety:

Avoid using bromelain if you take a blood thinner, such as warfarin, dabigatranrivaroxabanapixabanedoxaban and betrixaban, and others.

Bromelain, like aspirin, may have an antiplatelet effect on the blood,  increasing the potential for excessive bleeding. For this reason, avoid bromelain use before and after surgery.

Bromelain should not be used by people allergic to pineapple or other substances that may elicit an allergic reaction in those allergic to pineapple (cross-reactivity).

NAC is generally regarded to be safe. Bottomlineinc.com has an excellent article about it.

Talk to your doctor or ask the pharmacist before taking any nutritional supplements. Drug interactions and side effects can occur.

Where to get:

Amazon sells Bromelain at 1700 mg/capsule and 500 mg/capsule.

At the pandemic’s beginning, Amazon stopped selling NAC because people used it to treat COVID. Now it’s back.

The least expensive NAC ($0.15/count) with 4.5 stars and more than 10,000 reviews is NOW Supplements at 1,000 mg/capsule.

Addendum Jan 23, 203. Nattokinase can defragment the spike protein. Two studies have shown that.

  1. The study on PubMed is from March 2021, and nothing has come of it in two years? Seems like a nothing burger. Sadly.

    1. I know. They authors said that a clinical trial is coming soon in their study. I hope another group will duplicate or continue their research. A study can be done too to see if the combination works in Long Covid

        1. That’s true. The best that people can do is to try it and let other people know if it works or not. That is how medicine worked before, especially in there are new diseases. It starts with a one case report, then as the reports accumulate, a systems review can be made and published. Word of mouth is powerful too.

          1. This is so true. Trial and error.
But the study was done in vitro…” combining Bromelain at 100 µg/mL with NAC at 20mg/ml can completely fragment the spike protein.”
That gives no indication to dosing. The paper doesn’t mention the total ml amount that was needed.

          2. If I use bromelain and NAC, I will use the recommended doses on the bottles. Then I will monitor the results. For example, if I have joint pains after the COVID shot, I will establish a baseline reference of my symptoms. Grade the intensity or frequency of the pain. Then, I will start with the dose recommended on the bottle. Then, I will monitor the pain and frequency of the symptoms to see if it improves. If not, I will increase it slowly every week until I get the recommended maximum dose. Thank you for your question, and sorry for the delayed response. I will write an article about the topic soon.

          3. Absolutely…Before John D. Rockefeller took over the field of medicine (and happened to base new medicines on his primary business aka “oil”). After all that has happened with this “pandemic”– I can only hope there will be a serious accounting of what folks did, did not do, and hold them as well as the entire field accountable. I certainly appreciate your work here, and will absolutely share it in my circles. Have a great day!

    2. There is another supplement called Sulforaphane, which Johns Hopkins has studied for its effects on CoVid and other coronaviruses. I take it as well as nac/bromelain. So far, no CoVid, no common colds and no sinus infection I used to get every fall.
